In the Car Coil system of a gasoline car, the coil is a small device in the car’s electrical system. It contains a small transformer that stores energy and releases the entire power source when necessary. By the time the high voltage winding was triggered, it was already about 200,000 volts.

The car coil system itself works according to the following principles. When the compression stroke is completed in a particular cylinder, the crankshaft sensor sends a small signal to the ECU as to whether spark is required. When the coil is stationary, it will operate in energy storage mode.

After receiving a signal about spark formation, the control unit activates a coil relay, which opens one winding and closes a high-voltage winding. At this point, the necessary energy is released. The pulses pass through the distributor, which determines which spark plug needs to be energized. Current flows through the high-voltage wires that connect to the spark plug.

In older cars, the car coil system is equipped with a distributor that distributes the voltage across the spark plug and activates/deactivates the coil windings. In modern machines, such systems are of the electronically controlled type.

As you can see, in order to generate short high voltage pulses, a car coil is required. Energy is stored by the vehicle’s electrical system (battery or generator).
